  • Piranha Bytes redeems itself with this standout role-playing experience.

Whether or not you'll enjoy Piranha Bytes' Risen really depends on what kind of gamer you are. Though this is a more humble and user-friendly product than Gothic titles past, it's still very much a hardcore role-playing game. If you're not willing to figure some things out for yourself and the idea of freedom of choice doesn't sit well with you, chances are Risen isn't going to mesh well with your gaming sensibilities. If you're a Gothic fan, however, this is an absolute must-buy. If you're familiar with the genre and are looking to take the next step into a mature, well-realized fantasy world, then this is it. Its combat system isn't the greatest and its pacing is inconsistent, but for those who put in the time to see all Risen has to offer, it's an experience that won't be forgotten.

    Score details
    Presentation (9/10)
The game's sense of character and powerful atmosphere make for a truly memorable gaming experience, even if on the surface the fantasy elements may seem generic.
    Graphics (8.5/10)
Gorgeous stretches of terrain brought to life with fabulous detail and authenticity that greatly enhances the overall tone of the world.
    Sound (9/10)
Natural voice acting helps hammer home the personalities of Faranga's population and the ambient effects and music underscore an already strong sense of immersion.
    Gameplay (8/10)
The melee combat system could use some work, but in general the variety of skills, questing and exploration foster a memorable sense of adventure and accomplishment.
    Lasting Appeal (8/10)
There's plenty of content here on the island. Most of the structured stuff is front-loaded, with the latter parts of the game turning into mostly dungeon crawling.

    Risen 5-Years Later Review

ConclusionIs Risen a game worth returning to after five years? In my opinion, yes. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an RPG experience, which, by the way, is open world, and willing to invest the time into completing it. The graphics are dated, but also do some things right that will never be old. The story grabbed me as a return on investing some time into the game. The gameplay was fun, but has some issues that mar the experience. Fortunately the bulk of the game
