Paid 3500: - and run it on a crop sensor, thus suffering very little of soft edges. Pleasure as a happy amateur so far.

A pair of my first pictures with the lens:

Fast, quiet and feels just right to stay in. Not super sharp edges.
For 4000: - so I can not complain.

I needed a factotum lens when I switched me to a 7D and this fell into the basket quite quickly.

    The best:
    + Price
+ Build quality (Can build houses with it)
    + Sharpness
+ Minimal distortion (do not know how it is on full-frame)
    + Red ring (hawt)

    The worst:
    - 4.0
    - Need filters for full weather tightness
    - The lens hood that comes with will do no good on APS-C sensor cameras.

    Summary:
This lens is world class. On my 7d does it really well as a standard lens but basically it's a wide angle. The only negative thing is caring about the brightness, but it would be 2.8, it would cost double (at least). Can not live with 4.0, you should not buy this otherwise there are only good things to say about this lens.

    Very happy with this lens.

I run it on a FF and will be a perfect complement to my 24-70.

Had this to a 30D long ago. Then I was super happy.
When I bot camera so I bought the 16-35an instead.
A bit later, so I bot back into a 17-40ia, because I have not photographed as much wide angle. Then I had a 1Ds mkII, ie full sensor. Then I was a little disappointed with this loophole. Tried another similar but it was not spot on.

I would say, for crop 1.6, this is a good buy. Do you have full sensor and advice, go to 16-35an instead.

Maybe 2.8 would have made it better, but I am totally satisfied!

Everything exudes quality of this lens = purchases! You can not even compare the image quality of this lens with my older 35-135 mm (f 4-5.6) lenses.

Note however that this is a wide angle lens. I myself have a Canon EOS 400D with 22 mm image sensor and then it works superbly to shoot both portrait and people in different contexts treat up to a distance of about 5 meters. If / when all the "normal" DSLRs get image sensors of 35 mm, this lens particularly well suited for portraits and close-ups. I would estimate that the photo distances up to 2-3 meters will be a maximum distance of 35 mm image sensor.
