To sum it up, I was shooting some low light stuff on my dads 650D, and the orange Af beam stopped firing, the custom functions menu has it turned on, but it won't fire.

I resorted to popping up the flash to use it for Af assist, and then switching to manual focus, popping down the flash, exposing, then taking the shot, which is really tedious.

Anyone know whats up?

If it's not too much of a hassle, have you tried resetting to factory defaults? It solved a lot of setting problems in my experience.

A hardware issue isn't likely, so I'd expect a settings issue. However it seems that it was working and then for apparently no reason stopped. That make it sound like either you accidentally changed something, something (probably hardware) failed, or it has some other (probably light-dependent) setting interfering with it. You almost definitely didn't change anything, so that leaves the other two. Have you found anything elsewhere online?

I have reset the settings and it's still not working, and I tried in pitch darkness this morning, and it's still not working.

Sounds like maybe it is hardware after all, unfortunately.
