i'm looking for 144hz

anyone have any recommendations?

This is to help me establish a required budget. (prob $500-$1000)

As above. Ideally you'll get something that supports G-Sync or FreeSync depending on GPU, because 144 Hz is not the easiest to maintain. Resolution is going to have a big effect on price.

Would IPS be preferable or not?

AMD or Nvidia graphics card?

Current card is a 1070, CPU 3600X, 16G ram

1080p or 1440p 144hz?

Happy with 1080p

Would IPS be preferable or not?

I have 2x IPS monitors for Photography atm, but i do more gaming that photography, so happy to just keep one and swap in a gaming monitor

This is what I bought for the wife recently, and she has been very happy with it over her old 1080p 60hz LCD from 11 years ago. Now to upgrade her 980ti so she can take advantage of G-Sync! This would be well towards the lower end of your budget.

That looks very good to me.

Personally I wouldn't want a 1080p 27", but I'd be using it as a development workstation not for gaming. I'm not sure the 1070 would manage particularly high framerates at 1440p anyway, so sticking with 1080p is probably a good choice.

Posting a reply to this question quite late but just in case anyone checks this out in the near future I would recommend this monitor:

LG UltraGear 27GL850 (27", 1440p 144Hz IPS FreeSync, AMD FreeSync, Nvidia G-SYNC Compatible)

thanks for the recommendation, I hadn't checked back here, but ended up going for this exact monitor. I've only had it a few days so can't really talk to it too much but it looks very pretty in games! :D
