Should I? I've currently got a set of Seinnheiser HD 202s. Oh and would I actually need a headphone amp? Or is that more of an audiophile thing

Anyone know of some neat smaller stuff to boost it to $125 and free shipping?

I was about the purchase that exact headset actually and I also have a set of 202's right now.

Ended up buying a set of HD518's instead, with some extra Amazon promo credit I had lying around. Brought the HD518's down to about $50US.

I was considering the M50's for a while though.

What was your reasoning for going with the Sennheisers?

I own the m50s. Didn't realise what I was missing out on. I have no previous experience with headphones beyond that, just your average junk from the warehouse

I was weighing up the M50's or the HD518s for a while and decided on HD518's because:
  • I'll never take them out, or disturb people with them, so open headphones are fine
  • After trying some at jbhifi, I prefer the comfort of over-ear headphones vs on-ear
  • Judging from my brief listening experience, the Sennheisers have better soundstage, spacial reproduction
  • $20US cheaper

HD518s are open headphones. They leak sound both ways, so aren't great when out and about, they also don't fold up like the M50s, so are harder to store in a laptop bag or backpack. If they're for home use only, or the occaisional outing, they're fine, but if you wear them in an office, on the bus, library, etc, then they may be problematic. Because they're open, they have a wider soundstage. They also have stronger mids than the M50s, but lack the bass. For music like jazz, classical, or guitar driven music, the 518s would be an easy pick. For electronic or something like drop/low tuned metal, the M50s will probably give better sound. The 518s are cheaper. The Sennehsier HD headphones usually get good reviews for comfort, but I didn't like the ones I tried much, so be sure to give them a try. The M50s are a more generic design, so they won't be bad comfort wise if your head size/shape is a little odd, but they won't be amazing either.

There's also the HD558s, which are great, especially if you mod them a little you can get the sound fairly close to the HD598s. There's plenty of other great headphones around those prices. Grado SR60i/SR80i, Jaycar Pro Monitor and Beyer DT660 off the top of my head.

Might pick up the M50s in the future if I see some amazing deal for them. I'll just continue to use my HD202's at work, but my HD518's are going to be exclusively for home office use where they won't be bothering anyone.

Okay just ordered some M50s, and I could get a Fiio E6 (http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/B005HJWWW8) for $20. Is it worth it for someone who is going to almost exclusively at their desktop?

It says $28US for me, and you'd have to ship via YouShop. They're $49NZ at CL.

I probably wouldn't bother with an E6, especially at your desk. I've been looking towards grabbing an E11. There's a lot more choice for non-portable amps though.

Someone is selling one on Geekzone so thought it was worth asking. Will give it a skip for now

Ah, for $20NZ it's not bad. The E6 is small portable amp, so it isn't going to give much benefit, but it is compact. Something like the E11 gives a nice boost, but ends up being a similar size to the phone or player you use. Your typical non-portable headphone amps end up being even larger, thus being able to fit more/better components, and generally give better sound.

Or get double the space for only 45% extra ($175): http://www.amazon.co...d=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Or buy an SSD locally for the same price: http://www.playtech....uctdetails.html

$120 for an imported 120GB SSD doesn't seem that great to me. I'm sure I've seen them a lot cheaper.

Yeah I had the feeling it should be cheaper. Wanted to see if the cheap shipping made much difference, but not really I guess. $176.35 is pretty nice for 240GB :)

The M500 isn't too bad for importing, you basically save a few dollars by going through a much more hassled warranty process.

M500 120GB is about USD$87
M500 240GB is about USD$140

Shipping has always been pretty cheap for SSDs. You just have to wait until the base price is good (like the 240GB Crucial drive I posted above). 120GBs end up at $80 reasonably often, with special sales going to $75, $70, or even $60 in one case.

I'd say it's a lot more worth it importing peripherals and consumer electronics items.

Nexus 7 (2013) 16GB for USD$227 and CM Storm Quickfire Rapid Mechanical Keyboard for $USD$79.99.

CM Storm Quickfire Rapid Mechanical Keyboard for $USD$79.99.

More expensive for key switches other than Blacks, and it'd be helpful if you could give a final price, just for convenience :)

I think it was around $120-130 for another keyboard I looked at that was a similar price. So ultimately, not much cheaper than buying locally. It's $150 for the new model that has their ten-key/hybrid/thing, although, like Amazon, different switches are different prices.

Except it probably isn't. There's no pattern to it. Browns are cheapest with one model, and the most expensive with another.
