That sort of behaviour (charging a credit card as soon as the order is placed, and then having a long delay before they ship anything) is totally unacceptable in any store, completely irrespective of how long it takes to get to you – assuming you get it at all. Many real stores don't even charge your credit card before they ship an item, and then they only charge it for the item(s) they're shipping at that stage if your order is being sent in multiple shipments.

Besides, waiting a month for your order to be shipped is completely unacceptable no matter when they charge you for it.

I totally agree.

Dont get me wrong, i wouldnt buy from them again because of exactly those points you mentioned.

I was merely trying to convey my experience with them. For potential buyers to get an idea of what it will be like buying from them, and for those currently waiting on their orders that they are not total scammers despite the majority of reviews suggest.

Maybe i just got lucky but i am very happy with the goods and the price i paid.
For those reading, if you can afford it, for $40-50 more, you will get less headache from other more known and rated shops like Expert InfoTech.

Hi Chris,

I know this is a bit late, but I represent ValueBasket.com and wanted to take some time to address your concerns. Indeed we don't have a physical address in NZ as we are a Hong Kong based company. Our local number is provided to customers as a value added service so they do not have to dial overseas and won't be locally listed. Despite all this though shipping of all orders to NZ is still free.

As for not replying to emails, if you previously submitted a query to us please PM me your ticket id and I will have our CS team review. In the meantime please accept my apologies your initial experiences with us have not been up to the standard expected, but we look forward to helping you in case you are still in the market for any new gadgets or electronics items.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Angel Liu

Give ValueBasket's abysmal performance reflected on almost every consumer site I have researched, I have asked the Commerce Commission to examine the legality of posing in NZ as a local supplier, as well as making a complaint to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs about my own fruitless attempt to transact a purchase with you.

I do not intend to stop there.

Apparently, if you are lucky enough to get anything from this outfit (including your money back), there is some suggestion that they send you counterfeit products. Just saying.

I have also asked PayPal to examine whether it should continue to allow ValueBasket to use it to process payments. I have asked the same of Mastercard.

I have been curious about how Valuebasket gets such high customer ratings on it own website (via a survey out called Shopper Approved which seems to be run by Valuebasket.

Here's how they do it.

Of course, ValueBasket also rates itself. Not unexpectedly, these are the results. You can only imagine how they get those results.

Probably no need to comment further on that. The contrast with the reporting of responsible sites is glaringly obvious.

However, my own experience of Valuebasket’s review system was interesting, and I assume it applies to other customers. Normally a seller’s feedback system waits until a purchase has been made before asking buyers to provide feedback. Not Valuebasket.

Even while I was in the middle of a heated exchange about where the product/refund was, it kept sending me separate emails (I thought naively) that asked for reviews of their service – service it had not even supplied. I received about 5 or 6 of these things. At the time I thought of this as simply clumsy, but reflection suggests it was planned.

What Valuebasket seems to be doing is setting customers up to provide reviews for a single transaction before the transaction has actually been completed by the delivery of whatever the customer ordered or the refunding of purchase money. (The only part of the transaction that has taken place at this stage is the capture of the customer’s money.

The emails Valuebasket sends each time a customer contacts Valuebasket has a link to a Valuebasket site that contains a review template for customers to use. This is then fed into another survey website http://shopperapprov...aluebasket.com/ which crunches the numbers.

The questions they are asked to respond to are these:

Overall

Which, as you can see, have nothing to do with whether Valuebasket has delivered the products customers have already paid for – just about the quality of the emails Valuebasket sends them to keep fobbing them off. As you will realise, Valuebasket’s performance in writing emails is magnitudes of superiority to its performance in actually supplying goods. So it is difficult not to give favourable ratings on this questionnaire, though it has nothing to do with its core business of supplying reliable goods to customers.

The responses are then added to any responses from customers who have actually received what they tried to buy – automatically over-inflating by multiple levels the volume of favourable feedback. Sufficiently, indeed, to overwhelm any negative feedback from its many dissatisfied customers

Just for fun, I tried to reply to yet another such email by giving Valuebasket 1/5 on each of the criteria. I then watched to see if it appeared in Valuebasket’s chronological listing of feedback. No result yet.

And after examining the reviews other customers made over a period of only a few days, nothing now surprises me about ValueBasket’s self-scoring system. You can see from the review quotes listed below exactly what ValueBasket’s bombardments of emails requesting feedback is all about. None of the customers I have listed have actually received anything. Yet all of them give ValueBasket 5 stars, even when some of them have negative things to say.

This is a clever psychological strategy. ValueBasket cajoles and seduces customers into rating ValueBasket’s low prices and pleasant (though useless) customer support separately from its abysmal product delivery and refund systems. They respond out of anxiety, fear, hope or some Pavloviand response. It’s a deliberate rort. It would be interesting to see how these customers feel later on in the process.

And that’s in addition to pretty obvious shills. Valuebasket feeds this sort of stuff into its self-review system. No wonder it rates itself so highly.

Yey i think it is good overall. However, i can only really confirm this once the products are in my hand. Also i know you process payments in Aus, which is clearly a tax dodge. I think this is underhand and plan WRONG. Your accountants have no moral code of sense of duty and i wish them all the worst for the future.

Early days... haven't received my item yet.
(but what the hell, I’ll give them 5 stars)

That’s probably overkill in proving my point. But there is plenty more like that.

This was my response to one of their many review invitations:

Are you totally nuts? You had my money weeks ago and I am still waiting for what it paid for.

Cretins.

I suggest you edit out the URLs for the missing images, or replace them with * (I gather the images are the stars that they are rating them).

Hi there,

Whatever you do, DO NOT use Value basket. They are based in Hong Kong and generally you have to go with Hong Kong laws.

I bought a Nikon D3200 DSLR off them late August 2013, where the postage took 6 days, not the 3 days as told.
I then had to return it for a fault the camera had and by January 2014, after numerous phone calls and emails, I had a reply to say they were not going to fix it as it was the function of the camera. Total utter BS! So I requested a refund as they had not taken it apart for inspection.
Many, many emails later and now 28 April 2014, I finally got my refund after threatening them with Legal Action.

Please, pay that little bit extra for what ever you are buying and buy from somewhere else. All you will be doing is putting yourself through a whole lot of unnecessary stress and hassle by dealing with these clowns.

All the customer service slaves are worried about is if they are polite to you, not solving the actual problem. I will not ever deal with them ever again, and I am making others aware to avoid them like the plague.

I can only add my frustration and dismay at trying to deal with these fraudsters!

We only decided to make our purchase as they appeared to be NZ based with a .co.nz domain address and an Auckland telephone number.
We naively assumed that they were based in New Zealand and therefore subject to New Zealand laws.

We bought a supposedly unlocked LG Optimus 3 F260 8Gb LTE mobile phone and instead received a locked South Korea Telecom phone(same make and model)with only 4Gb of internal memory, that was incompatible with NZ frequencies and would not work at all!
We immediately contacted the company and requested their 14 day money back gurantee,as this was clearly not what we had ordered and we now realsied they were based in Hong Kong!

It has been 3 weeks of being passed from pillar to post via telephone and e-mail(very politely mind you) with absolutely nothing being achieved.I have raised a dispute with my bank who are going to investigate this further and I am hopeful that I may secure a refund through these channels.

I would like to report this company to the relevant consumer protection authorities in Hong Kong, but I am uncertain as to whom they might be.

I would greatly appreciate if anyone on this forum could provide me with these details.

DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM THIS FRAUDULENT WEBSITE!!

Do not use value basket under any circumstanes!!! They are the most useless business I have ever encountered! There is a small chance that your goods may arrive, but it is not worth it! I waited 2.5months for my gadget to arrive!!!!! I have made over 15 phone calls to them and 10 or so emails. Thier customer service team is absolutly useless, they can't understand a word you say!!!! They lie to customs about the value of the item, I rang NZ customs and they had 250 value basket items being held!!!!!! In the end I had to pay for custom brokers and GST fees! What a bunch of hopeless people! Never ever buy anything from Valuebasket and make sure you tell everyone!

I cancelled an order before they had prepared the goods for despatch. They went ahead and despatched anyway and made no attempt to recover the goods from the courier. I contacted the courier and told him to return the goods to Value Basket as I would reject the delivery if it reached my door. This took about 5 MINUTES on the phone when VB had claimed that their Logistics Department had been trying to do the same thing for 5 DAYS. Alarm bells ring!!!
They then told me I would have to wait until the parcel was received in their Hong Kong warehouse before they would start processing my refund. Once again their Logistics Department appeared incapable (or unwilling I suspect) of processing the return from the courier.
To cut a long story short, I have a chain of 78 emails, 20 phone calls from me, 2 letters to their CEO and General Manager (if you want the addresses let me know) and complaints to Hong Kong Consumer Council and Consumer Affairs, Victoria, Australia (where payment was taken by VB Australia).
Finally I made a chargeback claim under section 75 of the credit card regulations and my bank refunded my payment then pursued VB for recompense. Today I was advised by my credit card company that they have recovered their money from VB.
This saga has run from 29/05/14 to 11/07/14, and I dread to think how much longer it would have taken if I had not made the Chargeback claim.
The only advice I can offer is that if you can't afford to lose the money don't even consider buying from them. The costs of chasing them are higher than the money you may save on their cheap quotations, and they supply grey imports to the UK so I suspect that trying to get repairs under warranty will mirror my experience.

If it had been me I would have demanded the refund, and then when it didn't come through within a couple of weeks I'd have done a chargeback (which I'd have warned them of).

I just bought a Nikon 14-24mm lens through Valuebasket.co.nz. It arrived within 5 working days and in heavy bubblewrap. Maybe they have picked up their game?

That's not unlike some earlier posts, so I don't think it means much. Some posters have complained of long shipping times, but several more have complained about when things went wrong, with no comments about the initial ordering experience. At least one other has said that the initial order was shipped quickly, but that they then had problems later on. If their supplier had the lens in stock, it doesn't surprise me that it got shipped reasonably quickly.

Hi Guys,

I am not sure what you guys are on about. They accept PayPal so ideally you should use PayPal to make a purchase because PayPal is the safest and better then your credit card company to deal with online. Anyone who has used PayPal to deal with them? Regards

my 2cents on this:

I purchased something from Valuebasket and it arrived safe and sound; they did take quite some time to fufil the order (5 days for me) but item arrived within 3 days of postage. The item arrives duties paid and properly declared which is something to think about, this means no false declarations and no hidden customs fees.

I had no dramas at the customs border and afaik they have a local warranty and don't have any bullshit inspection fees, but their warranty t&cs have this little nugget in it:

ValueBasket.com reserves the right to return unrepaired, such product(s) which, after inspection are found to be unserviceable due to unavailability of parts, rejected after quotation is made or such other reason which does not enable the product(s) to be repaired. ValueBasket.com does not guarantee those unrepaired items can be restored to the original appearance or functions as before

which could be problematic.
