I need 2 cameras:
  • A <$600 DSLR that does 1080p video.
  • A <$350 camcorder that does 1080p video.

For the DSLR, I'm thinking nikon D3100?

And possibly a GoPRO for the second?

Any thoughts?

What do you need them for?

600D is a pretty nice budget DSLR. If you're after an action cam for the second slot, GoPro have that market pretty much sorted, although there are a few dark horses around.

The DSLR will be my main photography camera, also I'm also going to be using it as my secondary camera for shooting my short film (my primary being my dad's 650D ^_^), so I'm not looking for anything to extreme.

On the camcorder I need something portable for faster shots in my short film, that pules pulls focus easily.

Also, I'm in need of an underwater camera, so a GoPro would sort of have my sorted for that, as it's not a massive investment to get the underwater case.

I'd get the Canon then. If you're already used to Canon products from using your fathers 650D you'll get to grips with it very quickly. It'll also be a better camera for filming than the D3100.

Also, just realised, that I forgot to mention, I will also require a lens in the budget.

As I said above, a lens is in the budget. :/

I would take a Canon over a Nikon in a heartbeat, but it's hard to find a 1080p capable one in my budget.

Edit: Just realised I'm only $90ish off of the 600D, so time to start scraping my pockets ^_^.

You'd better fix your grammar too then.

Edit: Your first sentence is disgusting. Your second isn't much better. You've neglected to capitalise proper nouns in the third, and the fourth is just you being a twat.

You added an unnecessary comma in your apparent correction to my post, even the second isn't really needed.

I thought you had already pretty much decided? Either way, I agree with the 600D, and I don't know enough about camcorders to say anything there.

If you are getting a GoPro bear in mind that the shots they take are fish-eyed, so it may not be the best for filming with.

Nah it got completely saturated. I remember blowing through the micro-USB port and water coming out of every other hole on it.

And it still didn't work after washing it in distilled water and drying it out? (No surprise if the battery was permanently killed, but the rest should be fine.)

Does it have to be a DSLR? I'm a fan of Sony nex cameras, not sure how good they are for video though (My dad's 5r (i think) does AVCHD viedo which is pretty good.).

The video quality on the NEX cameras is just as good as most APS-C DSLRs. They have the same sensors as used in some Sony and Nikon cameras and most (all?) can do 1080p50. The great thing about them is that you can use almost any lens from any system through inexpensive adapters. You would preferably want to get one with full manual video controls, not sure if the earlier ones support that.

If you get invested in the system, there are lots of options to upgrade to in the future with the same mount: http://pro.sony.com/...XFS700:NEXFS700

I don't have a NEX myself, but I have a Sony A77 (same sensor as the NEX 7) and I've been very happy with the video quality. I imported it from the USA so it has 24/60p instead of 25/50p, If that's important to you then make sure you get the right version as only the latest cameras can be switched from PAL to NTSC standards.
