Hi guys.

Haven't been paying much attention to the mobile market so need some advice.

Requirements:

  • High end to flagship
  • Around $500 but flexible
  • Must either run stock android or be able to run cyanogenmod
  • The higher the version of android the better
  • Not too keen on a phablet..
  • SD card reader preferable
  • 1080p +
  • Good battery

For comparison my current phone was a galaxy s3 that died, so now I'm using an HTC sensation which is driving me crazy with how slow it is.

Thanks

What sort of size would you prefer, or maybe better put, what size do you consider to be the start of the "phablets" that you're not keen on and would therefore prefer something smaller than?

The SD card reader narrows things down quite a bit though, as does stock android or CyanogenMod support.

However, I'm not really the person to help, as I don't really pay much attention to smartphones...

I guess at the end of the day this is my main requirement:

  • Must either run stock android or be able to run cyanogenmod

and everything else is secondary

You can import an LG g3, g flex 2 (arguably a phablet), or sometimes galaxy s5, HTC one m9, and moto etc phones from eBay.

Forgot to mention that battery life is also important. My s3 and sensation struggle to last a day...

Please dont buy a LG G3. I have many problems with the device randomly restarting. Google LG G3 randomly restart on google and there will be many people that speak about this problem. FYI I have the 16gb version.

I'd recommend the S5 or OnePlus One.

Not a oneplus two if it's worth the extra cash?

Price difference in NZ still seems to big of a gap for the upgrade (+ issues of thermal throttling, shorter battery life and no quick charge)

And would most of you still recommend oneplus one over zenfone 2?

I got a Zenfone 2 (the 4GB RAM model) about a month ago after my G2 screen broke for the second time, wish I could go back to the G2,

battery life is abysmal

too big for pocket (I'll go back to 5inch and smaller)

screen sensitivity varies

auto brightness doesn't seem to work properly

setting audio profiles is painful (stock OS)

I'm going to get my hands on a Flex2 and see if I like it then sell the Zenfone

I'm actually upgrading from a G2 to a G Flex 2. I'll let you know how I get on if you like. It should arrive tomorrow.

I have been very happy with my G2 so far, I've just noticed that 2GB of RAM is starting to slow me down a bit. Battery life is amazing though.

I'd still solidly reccomend the OnePlus One, been my main driver for about one and a half years. No issues, battery lasts 3 days with Franco Kernel, with brightness at 50%. Still very, very fast, amazing display. Not much more I'd want in a phone to be honest, only going to upgrade when it breaks.

What are your views?

Oneplus One is more flexible, Nexus 6 has slightly better build, I find the size of the Nexus 6 obnoxious, and I use the OnePlus One, personal preference tbh.

Now Dad has thrown a curve ball.. He's getting a new phone, so I'll probably have a choice between his old iPhone 5s and my Mum's galaxy s4

Well, the S4 would meet your requirements very nicely. It might not be the latest flagship, but it is still a pretty decent phone.

I am selling a Samsung Galaxy S5 atm. it comes with the original box, phone, rugged case but not a super duper thick one, official samsung wallet case, a rubber case which has a kind of tyre pattern on the back and a 32GB SD Card. Would you or anyone else be keen? $500? or offers? PS i have used cyanogenmod on it before but changed back to touchwiz for the sake of selling but it runs great :)

Mum didn't want to use an iPhone, so I got Dad's one until either it breaks or I find an android phone that I really need to have.

Fair enough... It'll do the job, even if it isn't Android!
